The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® will take place on Sunday, Oct. 25.
The Walk to End Alzheimer’s - New Bern which attracts thousands each year to raise awareness and funds to fight Alzheimer’s disease will look different this year. Instead of hosting a large gathering, the Alzheimer’s Association – Eastern North Carolina Chapter is encouraging participants to walk as individuals or in small groups on sidewalks, tracks and trails across Craven County.
This year’s Walk will include three components. On Walk day, an Opening Ceremony will feature local speakers and a presentation of Promise Flowers to honor the personal reasons participants join together to fight Alzheimer’s and all other dementia, all delivered to participants' smartphones, tablets and computers. Next, everyone will walk in their own neighborhoods with their family and friends. Finally, the Alzheimer’s Association will create the iconic Promise Garden in a “view only” format that participants can drive by on Walk day at to honor all those impacted by Alzheimer’s.

The health and safety of the community is of utmost importance to Onslow County Partnership for Children. Due to continued concerns surrounding COVID-19, and with the well-being of attendees, donors, partners, and staff as the number one priority, OCPC made the difficult decision to reschedule its annual fundraising benefit, Diamonds and Denim, to January 23, 2021. Having spent the past year preparing for the event with the Board of Directors and community partners, OCPC is disappointed not to be able host the event this month. But agency staff have learned over the past few years that sometimes it is necessary to pause, be flexible, and remember that everything is “figureoutable.”
OCPC would like to thank donors and community partners for their continued support, open discussions, and encouragement. Great things happen when the community comes together to support children. While Diamonds and Denim is not happening this month as originally planned, agency staff continue to work each day to provide resources, programs, and support to children and families in Onslow County because their needs remain and the work of child abuse prevention is ongoing.
OCPC will continue to monitor health and safety recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and N.C. Department of Health and Human Services and are hopeful that the ability to safely hold an event of this size will be possible in January so that the agency can provide the Diamonds and Denim experience the community expects and deserves, in a safe environment.
OCPC is excited to host the community in early 2021 and will have more information on event specifics as the re-scheduled date gets closer. This is a very challenging time for everyone and OCPC is immensely grateful for the community’s understanding, patience, and continued support. OCPC staff hope to see everyone on January 23 for Diamonds and Denim 2021.
Albemarle Commission’s Senior Nutrition Program is seeking Meals on Wheels volunteers for routes in Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hyde, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell and Washington counties in North Carolina. There is an urgent need for volunteers in Chowan and Pasquotank counties, who have a waiting list for potential clients due to lack of volunteers. Routes start at 11 am, Monday through Friday. Each route takes about an hour to complete. Volunteering as little as one day a month makes a huge impact for our home bound seniors. For more information on becoming a volunteer, please contact Laura Rollinson, Volunteer Coordinator, at (252)-404-7091 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
